Plastic Cards for Non Profits

Wednesday, November 4, 2009 by Rachael Reinert

If you've ever worked in the not for profit sector then you intimately understand the need to create a big to-do with limited funds.

This is where plastic cards come into play.  As non profits depend on donors for funds it's important to thank them and make them feel a part of the mission and cause.

A personalized plastic membership card or tiered donor card (silver gold platinum etc) complete with the contributor's name and membership credentials can do just that.  An expiration date will also help remind them that the organization is depending on them again at the same time next year.

Plastic cards are durable and people will likely keep them in their wallet all year, or longer.  The space on the back of the card can be used for the organizations events or exhibits that will take place during the year.  The card then is multifunctional.
  • Make supporters feel like their donation counts
  • Help contributors stay connected the organization and the cause throughout the year
  • Remind donors when it's time to contribute for the next year
  • Advertise other programs and dates specific to the organization
For this and all of your other plastic card printing, custom gift card printing, medical card printing, identification card printing and other promotional card printing needs, cocontact Teraco or visit www.teraco.com

Cards in Black

Monday, August 24, 2009 by Rachael Reinert

Black, my favorite color, is sleek and stylish.  It portrays exclusivity, elegance and panache.

Naturally many plastic card issuers ask for a black printed plastic card because of this "cool factor."  The problem with plastic cards featuring a black imprint is that the black,  causes every scratch and fingerprint to show.  Nothing is hidden and every imperfection is on display.

Teraco recommends a matte finish which ads a texture and will hide all scratches associated with manufacturing as well as normal wear and tear.

Another solution is to use a mix of other colors.  It is still possible to achieve an overall sleek effect using predominately black but still incorporating other colors to break up the amount of continuous black.  Teraco's creative service team can answer questions and make more specific recommendations based on your artwork or overall design.

We also help with the design of your

  • Custom hotel key cards
  • Custom membership card program
  • Custom plastic business cards
  • Custom printed key tags
  • Frequent shipper cards
  • Custom plastic gift cards
  • And more

Designing for Clear Cards

Wednesday, August 12, 2009 by Rachael Reinert
Clear cards are all the rage these days because card issuers want something to help their cards stand out from the rest.

Starbucks does a great job of implementing the clear card design as the artwork on the back of the card allows for and doesn't interfere with the design on the front of the card.

Designing artwork for a clear cards can be tricky and there are several elements to consider.

Art Consideration for Clear Cards
Art on one side will appear on the reverse side of a clear substrate.  Therefore, additional steps must be taken with the design progression as well as the manufacturing process so that the overall desired effect can still be achieved.

  • Design - In terms of the design, the artwork on back of the card must occupy a similar space as the artwork on the front.  Because the artwork will show through on the reverse side any part of an image that bleeds over the common space will compromise the look of the artwork on the opposite side.  Because of this tedious design process and the time involved, you are likely to pay more for artwork.  Also, the artwork will need to be designed or manipulated by the manufacturer that will print the clear cards as they know best how the artwork will reproduce using their equipment.

  • Make Room for the Magnetic Stripe - If your clear card requires the functionality of a magnetic stripe or bar code this must also be accounted for in the design.  Starbucks often uses a colored magnetic stripe that compliments the overall color scheme so when it shows through on the front it doesn't look out of place.  A colored magnetic stripe is a custom process with a setup fee.  Therefore this solution is not best for small quantities.
  • Production - Clear cards typically go through an extra pass on the press during the production.  This process is to put a white coat of ink on one side of the clear card before printing the artwork.  This creates a separation between the color images on both sides so that each piece of art will not be affected by whatever is printed on the back.  Sometime by not doing this you may run into problems such as not being able to read the rules and regulations on the back of the card, or colors compromised by the artwork on the reverse side i.e. if one side has blue artwork and one side has red artwork, the image on both sides can appear purple if the white coat is not added provide the neutral background in between.

  • Added Costs - It can be difficult for clients to understand why a clear card is so much more expensive  than a standard plastic card especially in quantities under 10,000.  However, when shoppers and gift givers select your sleek, cool clear card over the competition, the extra cost just paid for itself.
Clear cards make great:
  • Custom membership cards
  • Custom plastic business cards
  • Custom plastic gift & loyalty cards
  • Frequent Shopper Cards
  • Advertising hotel keycards
  • Promotional cards
  • And more...

Plastic Hotel Key Cards area a great promotional and marketing tool.  Here are a few ideas for hotel key card advertising...

These events deliver highly targeted audiences especially for many niche B2B business groups.  A custom hotel key card is a great solution for these business groups including executives and decision makers who attend the shows.

Promotional Card Printing for Weddings

Friday, July 17, 2009 by Rachael Reinert
As the marketing manager for Teraco, an industry leading plastic card manufacturer, I am privy to many promotional campaigns that incorporate custom promotional plastic cards including corporate luggage tags, custom hotel key cards, custom key tags, custom plastic business cards, key ring tags, and other plastic card products.

When it came time for me to promote a personal venture, www.willlovesrachael.com (a website built by our wedding photographer that features a slide show of our special day) I naturally thought of using a plastic card to advertise the site.

The cards served a duel purpose
  • Show the URL and give details about when the pictures would be available for order and online viewing
  • Outline our new address and contact information
The positive feedback I received from my friends and family was overwhelming.

Not only were the cards available at each place setting at the dinner but I was also able to include them in our thank you notes to those that were not able to attend.  It was a perfect way to promote the site and share this day with everyone.  The card also serves as a keepsake for my own benefit.

Total Success!!!

Loco for LoCo Magnetic Stripes

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 by Rachael Reinert
What does LoCo and HiCo mean anyway?  Well, "CO" is the card industry's abbreviation for the word coercivity.

Mag

Coercivity is the intensity of the applied magnetic field to the magnetic stripe.  In English, this means HiCo magnetic stripes have a higher resistance to accidental demagnetization as compared to a LoCo mag.  Of course, with the higher coercivity also comes the higher price.

When to use HiCo vs. a LoCo mag

HiCo mags are ideal for programs that require increased durability because of the extended use, the frequency of use and potentially the environment of use (or storage).  Below are types of card programs that would typically utilize a HiCo mag.
  • Security ID/Access Cards
  • Government issued ID cards
  • Gas Cards
  • Financial Cards
  • College ID/Access Cards
LoCo mags are an economical solution for many common plastic card programs that don't require extended frequent use such as:
  • Membership Cards
  • Loyalty Cards
  • Gift Cards
  • Coupon Cards
  • Discount Cards
  • Hotel Key Cards
Teraco has a solution for your custom and promotional plastic card needs including custom plastic gift cards, plastic business card printing, plastic key tags and other plastic card products.

The magic behind the magnetic stripe

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Rachael Reinert
What do you really know about the magnetic stripe on the back of your gift card, credit card and the multitude of other plastic cards in your wallet?

If you are looking to implement a gift card (or other plastic card) program with this level of functionality or broker a portion of these services, keep reading.

When the card is swiped at the register it works like magic!  But unfortunately magnetic stripes are not powered by pixie dust.

Simply put, a magnetic stripe holds a unique number that is linked to a stored value account.  The plastic card is a tangible representation and access point to the account within the system in which it lives.

A common misconception is that codes for varying dollar amounts are loaded during the manufacturing process but this is not true.  Only the account numbers, which are provided by the processor managing the stored value accounts, are encoded onto the magnetic stripe during card production.  The card manufacturer guarantees that there will be no gap in the data meaning that two cards have the same number.

The more difficult and technical portion of a gift card, loyalty card, credit card or any other plastic card program is the back end processing solution.

Visa and MasterCard are two of the largest systems as they are accepted and can be processed by the largest conglomerate of retailers and service providers.  Private label credit cards, gift cards and other privately branded plastic card programs only work within their specified system e.g. Best Buy credit cards and gift cards only work at Best Buy stores.

Other payment and points based cards such as gift and loyalty cards work similarly in that they are only valid within the specified system or the store in which they are offered.  Again, this is not a fault of the actual card, but because the store in which the card will be accepted or processed must be within a centralized accounting/processing solution.

There are three components that make up a processing solution
  1. The point of sale system
  2. The processing software (within the POS)
  3. Real time bookkeeping/stored value management
All of these services are provided and managed by a processor or financial institution that keeps track of and processes the stored value accounts.

These processors make it possible for merchants to accept credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard.  Processors can also help merchants process cards for their own unique programs such as a gift and loyalty card and the magnetic stripe for a program like this is encoded with a range of numbers that is specified by the processor (as mentioned earlier).
The care is the simplest component of the scenario; however, it is arguably the most important aspect of the program because it is the physical piece that links the customer to the plastic card program and ultimately the store/brand.

Teraco can help you design or produce a custom plastic gift card, loyalty card, credit card, promotional card, plastic key tag, membership card, medical card, frequent shopper card, insurance card, plastic promotional business card or any other plastic card that is sure to stand out from the rest.

At this time there is no solution to process a card across multiple platforms.  For example there is no gift card that can be used in multiple locations other than those powered by Visa or MasterCard in which case the card must be accepted everywhere Visa and MasterCard are excepted and, of course, are subject to all fees and limitations.

The only other exception is where multiple stores share an accounting umbrella as well as processing platform.  This is why Toys R Us gift cards may also be redeemed at Babies R Us.  Also, restaurant conglomerates commonly offer similar flexibility to the consumer.

Each state has laws that govern what retailers can and cannot do with a gift card program in terms of expiration dates and associated fees.  This is another reason for the lack of a multiplatform solution.

Getting Started
  • Once a retailer chooses a gift and loyalty package from a processor they are ready to order plastic magnetic stripe cards.
  • Some processors supply the cards as part of the processing package and contractually bind retailers and service providers from using a third party source for plastic cards.
  • This, of course, is because processors make a healthy commission on the cards that they are not willing to give up.  The answer you or your client will likely hear in this scenario from a processor is, "Only our cards are guaranteed to work in our systems."  However, the truth is that any reputable card manufacturer will guarantee their products.
Alternately, there are a few Teraco friendly processors who will allow you to work with Teraco and manage the card buy yourself.  Those companies include:
  • Paytronix (this company provides gift and loyalty solutions for restaurant merchants only)
  • Fifth Third Gift Card Processing (gift card solutions only)
  • Smart Transaction Systems (gift card solutions only)
  • We can recommend other vendors for your specific processing needs.  Call today to speak to one of our sales experts.

Call To Action

Monday, June 8, 2009 by Rachael Reinert
Any marketing or promotional expert will tell you that the "Call to Action" is the most critical component of any direct marketing campaign.

It doesn't matter how perfectly constructed and packaged your message is if it doesn't lead the recipient to the next step in the sales cycle.

And because the call to action is so important it deserves some extra attention and special treatment.  Ultimately you want the call to action to be a takeaway piece that someone can easily keep and refer to later which is why a promotional plastic card is the ticket.  Yes you can also design your promotional plastic card to look, feel and function like a ticket, VIP, ID card or backstage pass.

A plastic card will increase the potency of the call to action not to mention improve the open rate in a direct mail campaign or the accepted hand-off rate in a guerrilla marketing scenario.

Nobody wants to pass up a promotional plastic card or plastic key tag because it might be a promotional gift card, loyalty card, free ring tone card, music downlad card, exclusive membership card, frequent shopper card, special access identification card, coupon card or other custom promotional card featuring a special offer.

Plastic cards have inherent value because we associate them with gift cards, credit cards, reward cards, drivers license cards, insurance cards, key cards, access & identification cards and other products that hold a monetary value, display important information or grant access to something exclusive.

Whether your piece is driving the consumer to vote, register, visit a website, attend an event, call for more info, or any other desired activity; a custom promotional plastic card will effectively drive home your message and positively impact the bottom line.  And we all can use more of that.

Everything you need to know about Plastic Membership Card Printing

Tuesday, June 2, 2009 by Rachael Reinert
Membership organizations depend on members for funds and volunteer support.  When embarking on custom plastic membership card printing and design there are several things to consider.

We all like to feel important and valued as a customer.  The credit card companies make a lot of money on this concept of exclusivity and status.  It means something to be a Gold, Platinum, or Diamond member and any member based program can have their own tiers or levels of participation and member benefits.  The more exclusive, the better.

Also, keep in mind that the card is an important component because it serves as the tangible piece that links the member to the organization and the cause.  As you move forward with developing the perfect custom plastic membership card for your member program, consider these points associated with custom plastic membership card printing...
  • Quality - Inferior cards can send the wrong message.  Chose credit card quality and thickness to capitalize on the value associated with payment cards.  Members need to feel valued and a quality plastic member card will help you achieve that.

  • Personalization - We all like to see our name in lights.  This element adds a personal touch and makes the program come to life.

  • Authentication - Adding a security feature in the membership card printing process; you communicate additional value and exclusivity.  A simple signature panel on a plastic membership card will yield a secure, high-end result.  This can also add to the usability of a membership program as a signed card can be used as credentials for your various events and functions.

All reputable plastic card suppliers will stand behind their products and be able to answer any questions you have about custom plastic card products as well as applicable plastic card programs such as membership cards, gift cards loyalty cards, promotional cards custom key tags and more.

Plastic Card Recycling

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 by Rachael Reinert

Plastic cards are infused in our culture. We use them for promotion, advertising, identification, access, payment, insurance, medical, membership credentials etc.

So now the question becomes what do we do with them after they expire or when they are used up?

Recycle LogoTeraco addresses this concern with a closed loop recycling program. As an environmentally responsible manufacturer of custom gift cards, custom printed keytags and other plastic card products, we recycle our own scrap associated with the production and printing of our plastic card products such as plastic member cards.

But then we take it a step further by partnering with our card issuing clients. Those participants send used cards back to us and we reuse and reprint on the plastic creating a true recycled plastic card made from a blend of both pre and post consumer recycled plastic. Ultimately this is a better earth friendly option than using a food product as a substrate for a card product such as corn.  Because of world hunger corn cards essentially create another moral dilemma.

We will continue to look for new ways to recycle but the most creative and beautiful methods for plastic card recycling comes from these artists.

Their products are available online…

Recession Proof Promotions

Friday, May 15, 2009 by Rachael Reinert

Current economic conditions have undoubtedly impacted promotional budgets. But here is an opportunity to adopt a fresh perspective, evaluate new ideas and deploy different approaches in order to reach your goals.

Plastic card programs such as promotional and loyalty card programs provide a high impact, low unit cost solutions to help you get more from less.

1.       Loyalty Card Programs

Customer loyalty is an increased focus in a down economy as businesses try to hang on to and get more from the customers they have. Loyalty Cards are a huge proponent of customer retention. Derivatives of the loyalty card concept also include…

·         Coupon Cards

·         Discount Cards

·         Frequent Shopper Cards

·         Membership Cards

·         Key Ring Tags

2.       Plastic Business Cards

In our culture plastic cards are most commonly used as payment devices such as gift cards, debit cards, credit cards etc. It’s ingrained in our heads that plastic cards have value because we use them interchangeably as cash. Delivering your promotional message on this same platform can be very powerful.

3.       Promotional Cards

A plastic card is portable durable document. Essentially a plastic card is a flyer only it doesn’t get thrown away which makes it the perfect solution for anything you’re looking to advertise or promote.
